Recommendations of RTMAPR,December 2010

Departmental Profile: The Department launched its M.Sc. Programme in July 1996. Duration of the Post Graduate course is two years. The first year training deals with core courses like cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, environmental science, biostatistics, bioinformatics, research techniques, microbiology and biotechnology. In the second year, students are exposed to frontier areas in Plant and Animal sciences depending upon their previous background. A number of research projects funded by DBT, UGC, DST, TAI, ICAR, MOEn have been undertaken by the faculty members of the department. UGC has sanctioned ‘Special Assistance Programme( DRS) to the Department of Life Science. Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Govt. of India has sanctioned centre of Bio-Informetics to the Departments of Life Science. The department has recently revised the syllabus as per the National and Regional needs. The Central Instrumentation facility is available in the departments. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt of India, New Delhi has also sanctioned FIST to the Department of Life Science. The students are provided flexibility to select Botany or Zoology stream in 3rd semester and to select their special papers available in the department.

Bio-informatics Centre

Bioinformatics is the application of Information Technology to the Biosciences with the object of collation of knowledge. It is a bright new area, which refers to data management, algorithm development and data mining.Bioinformatics stands for the development and use of computational and mathematical methods for acquiring , storing and analyzing, retrieving and interpreting biological data to solve biological problems.Considering the importance of Bioinformatics for the growth of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, the Department of Biotechnology(DBT), Govt. of India has provided Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility to Assam University, Silchar. The Centre was established in the year 2008,and since its birth it is actively associated with the popularizing Bioinformatics applications in Biological researches in Southern Assam and North East India as a whole.Computer Aided Drug Designing is the main thrust area of the centre. The Centre is actively engaged in research on Ligand Based Drug Designing from natural products. The centre provides teaching and research facilities to the students and researchers of the region. The centre coordinates the DeLCON facility where more than 900 high impact science journals are accessible.

Courses Offered:

i] Post Graduate Diploma in Bio-informatics(PGDBI) Duration : Two Semesters.  No. of seats: 20

(It is a self financing add on course and students enrolled in other courses may also go for this course simultaneously.Classes are conducted on Saturday and Sunday only.)
