About Research

In course of 40 Years of Teaching and Research career Professor Devashish Kar, is one of the Pioneer Researchers in India in the Field of Wetlands, Fishery Science and Aquaculture. He has, till date, explored and studied the Habitats, Fish Biodiversity, Changes through time and Management and Conservation of about 273 Wetlands and 52 Rivers in North-East India covering the Provinces of Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim; reporting the occurrence of about 270 Species of Fishes, many of them for the first time. The biggest Wetland, viz. Sone Beel (3457.12 ha at FSL) has been declared as a Wetland of National Importance on the basis of his works by the MoEF, Govt. of India, being recommended by the Govt. of Assam (vide Assam Govt. Letter No. FRM 41/2008/63-A, dt. 8.9.2008 from Commissioner and Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Department of Environment and Forests; vide Resolution No. 11 dt. 16.10.2008 of the Meeting of the Expert Group of MOEF, Govt. of India, New Delhi). Professor Kar is one of the pioneer researchers in the World in unravelling the causes of hitherto unknown enigmatic fish disease called the Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS).
