



The Department of Mass Communication started functioning in 1996. Over the last 27 years, the Department has established itself as a premier centre for communication studies in North East India. The Department currently offers MA, Ph.D. and D.Litt. programmes, where the current research thrust is on areas like health communication, media literacy, political communication, social media, and media, society, culture and technology. As per the mandate of the NEP 2020, the Department has also introduced the FYUG (Four-Year Undergraduate) programme from the current 2023 academic session. The Department is equipped with modern and latest infrastructure, including a Mac Lab containing 20 iMac terminals installed with FCP X video editing software and a host of other software, a new audio studio for all sound solutions, equipped with the latest Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and sound-proof recording floor, an ICT e-Learning TV production multi-camera studio floor installed with green screen, grid and stand lights and teleprompter, a video editing suite having iMac Pro hardware set-up to handle massive quantum of video feeds, and latest production equipment like mirrorless cameras, gimbals, and HD tapeless cameras. The Departmental library has over 670 titles of books and journals catering to the academic/research needs of the students. The Department subscribes to over 8 frontline daily newspapers and magazines for the benefit of the students. The library is also equipped with a flat-screen TV monitor connected to Tata Sky DTH to provide student’s access to all news and current affairs satellite channels. The Department currently has four research projects under its belt, sponsored by funding agencies like ICSSR, with a cumulative value of 4 million rupees. The illustrious alumni of the Department are today to be found in frontline public and private media organizations, central and state universities, government and private organisations, research agencies, educational establishments and private entrepreneurial enterprises.
