Computer Centre

Assam University Computer Centre is established in March 1997. It is the central hub for ICT related services for Assam University. The National Knowledge Network (NKN) Point of Presence (PoP) is commissioned in the Computer Centre. This acts as an Internet gateway for the campus-wide university network. A separate 10 Mbps connectivity under UGC-Infonet Scheme is also commissioned in the Centre for provisioning the resources that are available under the scheme to the university campus-wide network.

The campus-wide University network consists of state of the art networking equipment capable of providing high bandwidth with 1 Gbps fiber backbones at distribution level to provide connectivity to all Faculties, Departments and Centres at the Assam University Silchar (Main campus) & Assam University Diphu Campus (Second campus).

At present more than 1800 nodes are connected on the network and being served by more than 20 servers, 70 high-end switches, routers and security devices. All departments of both the campuses are connected to NKN for resource sharing with all major educational and research institutions across the country. ICT services including internet are being provided across the University using 1 Gbps bandwidth at both the Campuses as part of NKN.

Assam University Silchar, Computer Centre provides various services to all faculty members, staff and students of both the campuses of the University which include.

  • Designing, Expansion and maintenance of campus wide network, from time to time
  • Assam University official website maintenance and hosting
  • University Email server maintenance and hosting
  • Intranet based Application Development for governance, etc.
  • Providing Video conferencing facilities with different universities and Rashtrapati Bhavan, MHRD, etc.
  • Training programs for faculty, staff, research scholars and PG students
  • Conducting of the IT Skill Tests for the recruitment of the non-teaching employees of the university
  • Conducting of On-line GATE examination in association with IIT Guwahati.

The EDUSAT based Satellite Interactive Terminal (SIT) for conducting virtual classes is also available in the Computer Centre. This facility is established under CEC-UGC EDUSAT Network funded by ISRO, Govt. of India. The Computer Centre conducts various Distant Learning Workshops organised, time to time, by CEC-UGC New Delhi, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, etc.

The centre is also running a one year regular Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT) course and the classes are engaged by the experts available in the centre only. The technical staff of Computer Centre is also engaged in taking PG /IPP classes of various schools/departments under the university, on the basis of specific requirements.

Eligibility for Admission in to PGDIT program

Candidates securing not less than 45% marks in Bachelor degree in any discipline of Assam University or any other recognised university and Candidates having Degree/ Diploma in Engineering with minimum 50% marks are also eligible.

Eligibility for Admission to Distance Learning/Out Reach Certificate Course

As specified by organisers and recommendation of the concerned Head of the Department.
