Departmental Profile

The department of Arabic started functioning in July 1997. The department has designed its MA programme covering different aspects of acquisition of Arabic language skills with a due weightage on Arabic Literature. The department has adopted a functional curriculum for teaching – learning of Arabic as a vibrant foreign language. Capacity building on different linguistics skills, component of computer application with software in Arabic, and skill building on Arabic – English translation are the hallmarks of the programme.

Since the introduction of M.Phil & Ph.D. programmes in 2001, the department has been actively engaged in research in a wide range of areas such as Arabic Language and Literature both Classical and Modern Indian writings in Arabic, Arabic diaspora literature of the Americas and Arabic Socio-Linguistics especially interaction of Arabic with eastern Indian languages. Over the years, the department has established itself as the premier centre for research in Arabic Language, literature and culture in the entire East and Northeast India.
