📢 National Librarians’ Day Celebrated at Rabindra Library, Assam University

R abindra Library, Assam University, Silchar, is organising a special celebration of National Librarians’ Day on 12 August 2026, commemorating the 134th birth anniversary of Padmashri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India.

The programme, to be held at the Conference Hall of Rabindra Library from 11:00 A.M. onwards, will bring together members of the university community to celebrate the enduring legacy of Dr. Ranganathan and the vital role of libraries in education, research and knowledge creation.

National Librarians’ Day is observed every year in India to honour the contributions of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, whose pioneering work laid the foundation for modern library and information science in the country. His principles continue to influence the organisation, management and delivery of library services across academic and research institutions.

The celebration provides an opportunity to recognise the enduring contribution of libraries and librarians to teaching, learning, research and the advancement of knowledge.

The occasion will also highlight the changing role of contemporary libraries as dynamic spaces that support teaching, learning, research and intellectual engagement. As academic libraries continue to evolve with emerging technologies and changing user needs, the ideals of Dr. Ranganathan remain deeply relevant.

Through the celebration, Rabindra Library seeks to acknowledge the importance of librarianship while reinforcing its commitment to serving the academic community of Assam University.
