Departmental Profile

Established in 1996, the Department of Visual Arts at Assam University, Silchar holds the distinction of being the first University in Northeast India to introduce comprehensive programmes in Visual Arts, to offer 4-year Under Graduate (BVA)course, 2-year Post Graduate (MVA) course with specializations in Applied Art, Painting, and Sculpture and PhD course.

The Department is committed to nurture creativity, technical excellence, and critical thinking through a carefully designed curriculum that balances artistic practice with theoretical understanding. The Under Graduate programme provides student with strong foundations in creative composition, design principles, 3D visualization, and the technical handling of diverse media and materials. Alongside practical training, students develop an in-depth understanding of artistic traditions and global creative movements through the study of History of Art.

At the Post Graduate programme, greater emphasis is given on research, experimentation, and innovation. Students are encouraged to explore contemporary and interdisciplinary practices such as New Media Art, Installation Art, Sustainable Design, Performance Art, and Video Art. The programmes also create awareness of Community-engaged Art and Design Practices while reconnecting students with India’s rich folk and traditional knowledge systems.

To bridge academic learning with industry exposure, the department regularly organizes workshops, seminars, collaborative art and design projects, and interactive sessions with professionals and practitioners. Altogether, the UG and PG programmes offer a dynamic and immersive learning environment that empowers students to grow as creative professionals and confidently shape their artistic journeys.
